Biathlon Race Series
Come race biathlon! Local clubs coordinate with NSAA to put on the biathlon races. They set shorter courses for novices and recreational racers as well as International Biathlon Union standard competitors. Biathlon races are exciting to watch or take part in so come give one a try!
Younger juniors, under age 13 and recreational novices ski an approximately 1000m loop and do not carry a rifle. Junior girls/boys and older usually race 6.0-12.5 km courses. Younger junior class shoot only from prone position; all others shoot both prone and standing. Competitor’s results are tabulated based on skiing time and shooting results by USBA class.

Race Format
There are six different formats to biathlon races. The race descriptions are below for reference.
Sprint Format: All athletes have individual starts. Sprints consist of skiing three laps and two shooting stages, one prone and one standing. One penalty loop (~150m) is skied for each miss immediately after the shooting stage.
Pursuit Format: The start list for a pursuit race is determined by the results of the sprint race. The winner starts the pursuit first, second place starts second, etc. Pursuits consist of skiing five laps and four shooting stages, two prone and two standing. One penalty loop is skied for each miss immediately after the shooting stage.
Mass Start Format: All athletes start together and ski five laps and have four shooting stages, two prone and two standing. One penalty loop is skied for each miss immediately after the shooting stage.
Relay Format: The relay format is skied by teams. Each member essentially skis a sprint race before tagging their team member. They ski three laps and shoot two stages and ski penalty laps for the misses. However in a relay, athletes have the opportunity to use six spare rounds (up to three for prone and up to three for standing) to try and hit all five targets.
Individual Relay Format: Individual Relays are formatted exactly the same as Relay Formats, except there are no teams. Each athlete competes individually.
Individual Format: All athletes have individual starts. Individual races consist of skiing five loops and four shooting stages; prone, standing, prone, standing. No penalty loops are skied, instead, one minute is added to the finish time for each miss.
